We drive our minivan from Vejer to the neighboring village of Zahara de los Atunes. The tour starts cycling along the village’s promenade and through the luxury residential area. We will cycle uphill to reach a high point about 300 meters above the sea level. This place is the famous Camarinal lighthouse. From this point we can observe beautiful and varied views of the area. We will visit a famous Bunker from World War II times and built in 1940. We will also explore a beautiful area of wild beaches filled with white sand and dunes. At this point, we go down the hill towards the northern part of Bolonia, where we will enjoy stunning views of the giant dune, which has been awarded as natural monument and Bolonia beach (ranked as one of the most beautiful in Europe).
Once on the beach, we will visit the Baelo Claudia Roman ruins (in excellent state of preservation). The city was initially a Phoenician settlement. Deriving its wealth from the fishing industry, Baelo Claudia supplied the popular Roman delicacy, garum (fish paste) to the whole Roman Empire. It was thriving at the time of Emperor Claudius (41-45 AD), who gave the town his name.
