BOLONIA: ROMAN HERITAGE

Our road cycling tour starts in Bolonia and has a distance of 107km. This is a very flat tour where we will enjoy the best beaches of Cadiz, Tarifa and the dunes of Bolonia with its famous Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia.

This road cycling tour starts riding towards Barbate (15.6km.). We will pass by La Barca de Vejer, where we will have the chance to watch an important settlement of some of the birds in serious danger of extinction such as the Ibis Eremita.

Next stage will will take us and our bikes to Atlanterra (17.7km), where we will enjoy the breeze and beautiful views of the beaches of Los Militares. We cross the bridge over the river Chacón in order to access the town of Zahara de los Atunes. We will ride towards the luxury resort that extends through the slopes of the Cape of Grace and the mountain of Silver.

Riding another 28.6km we will return to the town of Facinas, crossing the districts of Zarzuela and Tahivilla and contemplating beautiful views of the different mountain ranges sorrounding us.

Our next stage in this road cycling tour will takes us 22.1 km all the way to Tarifa passing the southernmost point of the Iberian peninsula, the tip of Tarifa or “Moroccan”. This is a geographical accident that is located on the island of Las Palomas, joined today to the own city ​​by means of a highway-street, that serves as access to the lighthouse that it is located there. The cape or Punta de Tarifa also serves as a dividing line to the waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, which cross right in front of the city itself. It is located in the narrowest part of the channel or Strait of Gibraltar, at a minimum distance of 14 kilometers from the Moroccan coast, making it the closest European city to the African continent.

The last part of our bike tour will lead us riding our bikes another 23.2km all the way to Bolonia, where we will visit its famous fine sand dune and the Roman Ruins of Baelo Claudia. The ruins are inside the Nature Park of the Strait. The study of its architectural remains shows its Roman origin at the end of century II a. C., already observing since that time a great wealth that turns it into an important economic center within the Mediterranean area.

The difficulty will depend on how fit you are. We can choose different routes to reach the points described above.
